A Maine Basketball Hall of Famer, and one of the most prolific scorers in NCAA Division III college basketball history, is selling his southern Maine home.
The stately home of three-time all-American Matt Hancock, who racked up 2,678 points over his basketball career at Colby College in Waterville, is on the market for just under $3 million. Hancock left Colby as Maine’s all-time collegiate scoring leader and was inducted into the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012.
Unsurprisingly, Hancock’s Casco property at 915 Meadow Road — known as “Land-Lo-Get” — has all the trappings of a former superstar athlete’s home. There are two basketball courts on the property — one outdoors, and a second, collegiate level half-court inside a renovated dairy barn. The two-story barn has its own well and septic, and it was also converted in 2004 to include the court, a fitness center, sauna, two bathrooms and two office spaces.
“It’s a really, really special property. There’s no question about it,” Jane Chase, the listing agent with LandVest/Christie’s International Real Estate, said. “It’s attractive to a lot of people who are athletes.”
Recreation opportunities extend past the barn. The 11.4-acre property has a dock and 2,200 feet of private waterfront access to Parker Pond, a private and quiet area renowned for its salmon fishing and waterskiing opportunities, Chase said. It also boasts easy access via canoe, kayak or paddle board to adjacent Pleasant Lake, a busier area with a beach and boat launch.
Though it’s right in the heart of the Sebago Lakes region, Casco’s community center, library and convenience store are within walking distance of the house, Chase said. The home is a 50-minute drive from Portland.
“What you really have here is the best of both worlds,” Chase said.
This property has been in the Hancock family, of Hancock Lumber fame, for generations, Chase’s co-listing agent, Jim Nadeau, said. The house itself, built in 1997, is nearly 3,000 square feet and has four bedrooms and three bathrooms.
The home is built to entertain, Chase said. A speaker system is built into many of the house’s 11 rooms and into the outdoor patio area, which has a fire pit fit for “smoking cigars and roasting marshmallows,” she said. Other stand-out features include the home’s stone hearth, wood stove, an outdoor shower, hot tub and a sunroom overlooking the pond.
Though the property is outfitted for a professional hooper, Chase and Nadeau said a new buyer could transform the barn area into another recreational opportunity, like a yoga studio or pickleball court, or someone could make it into something else entirely of their own design.
Since the property was relisted a month ago, after a brief spell on the market last fall, Chase and Nadeau said they have seen lots of activity on the listing and a couple serious inquiries. Though at nearly $3 million, it may sit a little longer on the market and will take a particular — and perhaps an athletically inclined — buyer.
“This property is unique,” Nadeau said. “The spring market in Casco and the Lakes Region really only begins to kick off at this point in time, yet the activity is robust.”
