Despite great travails country not bankrupt: Mahat

Bhojpur, January 7

Central leader of Nepali Congress and former finance minister Ram Sharan Mahat today claimed that his party’s economic policy had sustained the country so far.

He claimed, “NC’s economic policy after the restoration of democracy in 1990 had saved the country from becoming bankrupt.”

Speaking to journalists at Biratnagar Airport today, Mahat said though the country was paralysed due to the decade-long Maoist insurgency, the powerful April earthquake, the months-long agitation launched by the madhesi forces and the blockade at the border points, it was saved from becoming bankrupt.

Mahat, who was nominated the best finance minister of 2015, said the country was lagging behind due to weak politics not because of economy.

He accused the ministers in the jumbo cabinet of talking much instead of working to uplift the real life situation of the people.

He also expressed confidence that the government would hold a decisive meeting with the agitating Madhesi front to relieve the country from the prolonged deadlock very soon.

Terming the new constitution the best constitution of the world, Mahat argued that no constitution could address and satisfy 100 per cent people. “There are various dissatisfactions in the Nepali Congress over the constitution.

However, there is no option but to compromise as it is a common written document of the people from all the parties,” he said.

Mahat said that he might be filing his name for the party’s topmost post in the upcoming 13th general convention of the party. “I am thinking of contesting for the post of party chairmanship.

However, I am yet to consult with other leaders and cadres across the country.
