Texas has hired Sean Miller as its new men’s basketball coach, according to reports Sunday by both the Austin American-Statesman and 247 Sports.

Miller, 56, has spent the last three seasons at Xavier. Prior to that, he spent 12 years at Arizona, taking the Wildcats to the NCAA tournament Elite Eight three times.

Miller would replace Rodney Terry, who was fired after losing to (ironically) Xavier in the NCAA tournament First Four on Tuesday. News of Terry’s imminent dismissal broke on Wednesday, but Texas did not officially announce the move until Sunday via a statement from athletics director Chris del Conte.

Terry went 62-37 with three NCAA tournament berths in two-plus seasons at Texas, which finished 19-16 overall and 8-10 in conference play in its first year in the SEC. He took over as Texas’ interim coach after Chris Beard was fired following an arrest in December 2022 and was elevated to the permanent job after leading the Longhorns to the Big 12 tournament title and NCAA tournament Elite Eight that season.

Miller is 487-196 in 20 seasons as a college head coach, eight in two separate stints at Xavier and 12 at Arizona. While with the Wildcats, he was embroiled in the FBI investigation into college basketball corruption that also ensnared Rick Pitino (then at Louisville) and Will Wade (then at LSU).

Like Pitino and Wade, the scandal cost Miller his job, though not until after an NCAA investigation was completed. Among other penalties, Arizona was forced to vacate 50 wins from the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons for using an ineligible player.
