The US is in for a historic year for closures in 2025 as retail giants prepare to shutter thousands of stores across the country and dozens of Kohl's locations are among them.

The department store chain is set to close 27 underperforming stores by April. "We always take these decisions very seriously," Tom Kingsbury, Kohl’s former CEO, said in a January announcement. "As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams."

Kohl's, which operates more than 1,150 stores across all US states except Hawaii, said it "continues to believe in the health and strength of its profitable store base" but that "these specific locations were underperforming stores." The retailer raid employees affected will either be offered severance pay of the opportunity to work at another location.

The decision comes as Kohl's fiscal 2024 results show significant sales declines. Net sales decreased 7.2% to $15.4 billion while comparable sales dropped 6.5%. “We have identified key areas of focus and are taking action in 2025 to reposition Kohl’s for future success," the retailer's new CEO Ashley Buchanan said.

He continued: "Our customers expect great product, great value, and a great experience from Kohl’s. I am confident that the areas we identified will deliver on what customers want and expect from Kohl’s."

Kohl's is among a number of brick-and-mortar retailers struggling to stay afloat. Macy's announced late last year that it would be closing 66 stores by the end of the year and all 150 of its stores by 2026.
