HARTFORD, Conn. (WFSB) - More federal cuts are impacting Connecticut Foodshare.

The Emergency Food Assistance Program helps move food from farms to food banks, but is now facing major funding slashes.

Earlier this month, Connecticut Foodshare said the Local Food Purchase Assistance was eliminated.

They said the program would have enabled them to provide millions of fresh, Connecticut-grown meals to the 1 in 8 Connecticut residents (including 1 in 6 children) experiencing food insecurity.

With the latest cut to the Emergency Food Assistance program, Connecticut Foodshare says two truckloads of food for families were cancelled.

“We are very concerned about the future of these TEFAP allocations and if cuts persist, we and the people we serve stand to lose access to more than 4 million pounds of food,” Connecticut Foodshare said. “The people most impacted by these cuts are our already vulnerable neighbors: seniors, children, working families and people with disabilities. These cuts only serve to cause further harm.”

Foodshare advocates say they are fighting to find a solution through legislation.
