      Xavier hiring New Mexico’s Richard Pitino as next head basketball coach
      The Xavier Musketeers have found their next men’s basketball coach.On Tuesday night, college basketball insider Jon Rothstein reported that Xavier is hiring New Mexico head coach Richard Pitino. Xavier later confirmed the move on social media.Pitino has coached for 13 seasons in college basketball at three different schools, most recently leading New Mexico to the Round of 32 in the 2025 NCAA Tournament. Pitino, 42, is the son of legendary college basketball coach Rick Pitino, the current coach of St. John’s who also coached at Louisville and Kentucky.Pitino started his head coaching career at Florida International for one season before leading Minnesota from 2013-21.Pitino won 141 games with Minnesota and made the NCAA Tournament twice before taking the head coaching position at New Mexico.Under Pitino, New Mexico has made the Big Dance in each of the last two seasons. The Lobos went 88-49 in his four seasons there.Before becoming a head coach, Pitino was an assistant for his father Rick at Louisville from 2007-09 and again for the 2011-12 season."Xavier is one of the great brands in all of college basketball," said Pitino in a release from Xavier Athletics. "It has always been a dream of mine to coach in the BIG EAST. The Cintas Center is going to be rocking. I can't wait to get to work."Pitino won the Big Ten Coach of the Year award in 2017 and the 2025 Mountain West Coach of the Year award. He's 2-4 in NCAA Tournament games, with his most recent win coming against Marquette last week in the Round of 64."We are excited to welcome Richard Pitino as our new men's basketball head coach," said Xavier Director of Athletics Greg Christopher in a statement. "He has proven himself as a winner as a head coach at New Mexico and has an impressive resume of success before that as a head coach at Minnesota. His success as an assistant stood out, especially his time working for his father, Rick Pitino, at Louisville and Billy Donovan at Florida. We had tremendous interest in our head coaching position. It became clear that Richard was the right fit for Xavier to take us to championship success in the BIG EAST and NCAA Tournament."Sean Miller left Xavier to take the head coaching position at Texas this week, leaving the Musketeers with an opening to fill.Earlier on Tuesday night, former Xavier head coach Chris Mack announced that he was returning to the College of Charleston amid rumors that the Musketeers had interest in him as their next head coach.
