Croatia’s U-21 national team has won the International Cup U-23 in Doha after defeating Thailand 3-1 in their final match of the tournament.
The tournament featured Australia, Egypt, Croatia and Thailand.
Despite falling behind in the 56th minute to Thailand due to a penalty, Croatia turned the game around with goals from Lovro Zvonarek (71’), Luka Vušković (75’), and Mate Antunović (penalty, 90’).
Head coach Ivica Olić praised his squad for their effort and determination, especially given that this was their first tournament together as a team.
“Winning this tournament is a great achievement for us and a big reward for the hard work the boys have put in. We had difficult moments, but we showed character and team strength,” said Olić.
He admitted he wasn’t pleased with the team’s first-half performance but was happy with the reaction after substitutions.
“At halftime, I would have changed ten players if I could. But those who came in made a difference, and we dominated the second half, creating numerous chances. It was only a matter of how many goals we would score.”
Zvonarek, who scored the equaliser, emphasised the importance of team spirit.
“It wasn’t easy at the start, but that’s why we need the whole squad. We fresh players came in and turned the game in our favour,” he said.
This tournament also served as a great preparation for future challenges, with Croatia playing three matches and completing four training sessions on top-class pitches.
Croatia beat Egypt 3-2 after earlier losing to Australia 2-1.
Olić and his squad now look ahead to June, where they will continue their preparations for upcoming competitions.
