A doctor accused of trying to kill his wife by smashing her head with a rock and trying to throw her from a popular beauty spot, claimed it was her fault for refusing to have her photo with him.

A manhunt was launched to find Gerhardt Konig on Monday after his wife was found with critical injuries to her face and head and and remains in hospital. Officer tracked him down after six hours, which ended with the qualified doctor being chased on foot down Pali Highway in Hawaii.

The Honolulu Police Department say the 46-year-old man tried to push his wife off the Pali Lookout trail around 10 am and struck her in the head with a rock. Law enforcement sources say the alleged attack began after Konig’s wife refused to take a picture with him. Sources also say Konig tried to prick his wife with syringes.

A second-degree attempted murder charge is pending review from the prosecutor’s office. Maui Health confirmed they employed Konig through an independent agency and he worked at various medical facilities across the Valley Isle including Maui Memorial Medical Center. It did not disclose what type of treatment Konig provided, but his Linkedin profile says he is an anaesthesiologist and has been on Maui since 2023.

Prior to that, Konig was an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh. In a statement to Hawaii News Now, Maui Heath confirms they have suspended Konig pending investigation.

Commenting on the case, Sanoe Kaaihue, executive director of domestic violence charity, Women Helping Women said: “Both prominent people in our community. Not just him, but also her. Highly intelligent, highly successful folks. DV (domestic violence) does not discriminate. I think time and time again, people are so surprised when they hear that it’s their teachers, it’s neighbours, it’s attorneys. It’s everybody from every single walk of life can be affected.”
