The final day for 27 'underperforming' Kohl's department stores has been confirmed as Saturday March 29 with a full list of effected branches released.
The closures of the popular chain comes as the US is being struck by a wave of shops shutting across a worrying number of well-known retailers.
The 27 Kohl's locations, across 15 states, are going to finally shutter over the weekend. Tom Kingsbury, the former CEO of Kohl's, highlighted the gravity of such decisions in a January statement: "We always take these decisions very seriously," he said.
"As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams."
Although Kohls operates a vast network of over 1,150 stores, excluding Hawaii, the company affirmed its confidence in most of its stores' performance, noting that "these specific locations were underperforming stores."
The company assures that affected staff will receive severance offers or the chance to work at another location.
This move coincides with a dip in Kohls fiscal numbers for 2024, showing net sales falling by 7.2% to $15.4 billion and comparable sales declining by 6.5%. New CEO Ashley Buchanan spoke about adjustments for the future: "We have identified key areas of focus and are taking action in 2025 to reposition Kohl's for future success," he said.
Buchanan concluded with optimism, asserting, "Our customers expect great product, great value, and a great experience from Kohl's. I am confident that the areas we identified will deliver on what customers want and expect from Kohl's."
Kohl's is just one of many traditional retailers battling to keep their heads above water. Macy's revealed late last year that it would be shutting down 66 stores by year-end and all 150 of its outlets by 2026.
Fashion giant Forever 21 is also closing all of its stores following its second bankruptcy filing in six years, while fabric and crafts retailer Joann announced it was closing shop after 80 years, shuttering 800 stores across 49 states.
