Macy’s is saying goodbye to a laundry list of locations across the country.

The department store is keeping up its promised initiative from February 2024 to close 150 stores by the end of 2026. In a press release from early January, the company confirmed 66 locations that will be included in the first wave of closures.

The stores that have already closed or will be closing this year are located in 21 states, including Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Mississippi, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Washington.

One of Macy's Brooklyn, N.Y., locations at 422 Fulton Street was among the 66 stores deemed "underproductive." According to local outlet News12 Brooklyn, the store officially closed on Sunday, March 23, after a three-decade run.

While there hasn’t been an exact timeline for all store closures, the company’s website says that Macy’s clearance sales, which began back in January, will continue for about eight to 12 weeks. Macy’s Backstage and Macy’s Furniture Galleries also have clearance sales for about six weeks that began last month.

“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go-forward stores,” said Macy's CEO and chairman Tony Spring in a statement, “where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service.”

In a statement obtained by PEOPLE, the company provides customers with responses to frequently asked questions regarding the closures as well as a link to find the nearest open Macy's location.

The move is part of a larger initiative named “Bold New Chapter” which aims to “return the company to sustainable, profitable sales growth.” The new strategy, as explained by Spring, is a call to action for the brand to challenge the status quo by giving Macy’s a more upgraded and modern appeal, in an effort to revitalize the company’s relationship with its clientele and develop an improved shopping experience.

Along with the closures, Macy’s Inc. is also shifting to focus more on their luxury markets, namely Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury.

As part of the new strategy, the company is looking to open 15 additional Bloomingdale’s locations, a minimum of 30 Bluemercury stores, and approximately 30 remodels of Bluemercury locations by 2027.

While these are in development, Macy’s Inc will also research, test and implement a more efficient operation — including its supply chain asset portfolio, fulfillment, and inventory planning and allocation — to further its mission to “anticipate future omni-demand.”

Macy’s currently has 350 open stores that the company plans to move forward with into 2027.  The well-known department store is joining other legacy brands that have also announced plans to shutter locations across the country.

Kohl's announced that it'll be closing 27 locations on Saturday, March 29, following the company filing for bankruptcy back in January.

In response to its own bankruptcy announcement, the second of which the company has filed, Forever 21 announced this month that it's set to close all of its U.S. unless it finds a buyer to salvage the clothing store.
