OREGON, Wis. -- A lightning strike broke a gas line in Oregon Friday morning. 

Oregon fire/EMS were dispatched to the area of Cledell Street and Ames Street in Oregon. When crews arrived on scene, there was a heavy odor of natural gas in the area. 

Utilizing gas monitoring devices, natural gas readings were within the explosive range. Alliant Energy was contacted to assist with the incident, and residents in the area were taken to a safe location. 

Oregon Fire Chief Glenn Linzmeier said a storm system moved through the area, and the storm produced a lightning strike to a tree. 

The affected area was isolated to Cledell Street between Chelsea Court and South Perry Parkway. 

Oregon fire and EMS units cleared the scene at approximately 8:30 a.m. after residents were allowed back into their homes. 

Alliant Energy said it is anticipated repairs will be completed by noon.
