Iowa — The Iowa Utilities Commission encourages customers to seek utility bill assistance before the moratorium on service disconnections ends this coming Tuesday, April 1st.
By law, utilities will be allowed to resume service shutoffs on April 1st. Customers who have been unable to keep up with their utility bill are encouraged to review their utility’s disconnection policies and procedures, and contact their utility immediately to avoid natural gas or electric service shut off and make payment agreements.
The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance program assists thousands of Iowans with a portion of their heating bills every year. Customers who qualify for LIHEAP are also protected from utility service disconnection annually from November 1st through April 1st. Customers can continue to apply for LIHEAP through April 30th. Local community action agencies may offer additional resources.
