HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (KATV) — The Arkansas Derby is set to return this weekend, promising a thrilling experience for racing enthusiasts and families alike.
Chris Ho, Vice President of Marketing at Oaklawn Racing Casino, shared details about the event, which is expected to draw large crowds.
"We can expect big crowds. Last year we had 60,000; the year before, we had 65,000, so we're really expecting a big crowd," Ho said.
The event will kick off with doors opening at 10:30 a.m. and the first race starting at 11:20 a.m. on Saturday. The highlight, the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby, boasts a $1.25 million purse and will be broadcast on Fox, FanDuel, and NBC at approximately 6:48 p.m.
Safety is a top priority, Ho emphasized. "We will have safety all around the building, both our own safety and outside safety teams that we have coming in. So safety is paramount," he said.
The weekend will also feature a derby hat contest with four rounds, including a children's division. "Our past three Miss Arkansas winners will be judges, and they'll actually be doing meet and greets in the infield as well," said Ho.
For the first time, the Arkansas Razorback marching band will perform pep rallies and play the national anthem before the Arkansas Derby. "We are just super excited about them being here," Ho added.
Families can enjoy a variety of activities in the infield, including bouncy houses, magicians, face painters, rock walls, and food trucks. "It's fun in the infield," said Ho.
For those interested in betting, Ho recommended watching the Oaklawn Today Show for expert opinions. "I bet on a horse to win and a horse to show; that gets me two horses to root for on each race," he said.
The event promises to be a celebration of Arkansas tradition, offering something for everyone.
