Mark Chapman smashed a magnificent century and Nathan Smith took 4 wicket as New Zealand cruised to a 73-run victory over Pakistan in the first ODI in Napier on Saturday. Chapman’s career-best 132 laid the foundation for an massive total of 344-9 at McLean Park.
Pakistan appeared well on course in their chase at 249-3, needing just 96 more runs with 11 overs to spare. However, seamer Smith (4-60) triggered a dramatic collapse, with the final seven wickets tumbling for just 22 runs.
Pakistan skipper Mohammad Rizwan expressed dissapointment over the failure of lower order as the bottom six batsmen managed to score only three runs collectively.
“We started the innings with good intent,” Rizwan said.
“Obviously, at the end, the pressure increases because you’re getting nearer to the chase. We lost wickets and it changed the momentum.” He added
However, Babar Azam was the top scorer for Pakistan as he scored 78 off 83 balls but, his dismissal triggered the collapse. Salman Agha scored 58 off 48 but a series of loose shots selection from the lower order cost Pakistan, allowing New Zealand to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Chapman’s century included 13 fours and 4 sixes which rescued New Zealand from early trouble after they were put in to bat at 50-3. The left-hander put on a 199-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Daryl Mitchell (76 off 84) before debutant all-rounder Muhammad Abbas provided a memorable finish to New Zealand innings.
“It was certainly pretty tricky early on, the ball was moving a lot. We were probably aiming for a total a little bit lower than what we got in the end,” Player of the Match Chapman said
“But it’s something we pride ourselves on, being able to adapt to the conditions and then stay in the game and just keep scrapping. We rode our luck at times and then Muh (Abbas) put the icing on the cake. It was outstanding to see.” Chapman added.
The second match of the series will be played in Hamilton on Wednesday.
