Iowa DOT Issues Warning About Unpaid Toll Scam

Ames, Iowa — The Iowa Department of Transportation is sounding the alarm over a scam involving residents receiving fraudulent text messages that sometimes appear to be from that agency.

The messages state that the recipient has an unpaid toll or registration fee. The recipient is then instructed to click on a link to provide personal information and credit card numbers. Many times that link will lead to a website that resembles the Iowa DOT’s website.

Iowa DOT officials say the texts are NOT coming from them and that citizens should not click on links within the messages or provide any personal information.

Officials with the Iowa DOT say they do not send out fee collection reminders via text message, and that the agency does not collect tolls on any of their roads or bridges.
