• 60 YEARS AGO — The Brandon and Wheat City Curling Clubs declared champions in all categories over the weekend. Eldon McLean won the Brandon club laurels over Ivan Carlisle while Jim Williamson was crowned king at the Country Club by downing Bob Fines.
• 50 YEARS AGO — Shayne Peters of Brandon captured a bronze medal in Regina at the fifth annual Canadian Youth 10-pin bowling championships this week. Peters, competing in the bantam boys’ division of the two-day event, finished with a 9-6 won-lost record in the match-play affair.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Spectrum Sportsmen evened the best-of-seven SouthWest Hockey League final with an 8-5 win over the Boissevain Border Kings. Brian Simpson and Kevin Malchuk both finished with two goals each.
• 20 YEARS AGO — Doug Armour helped Manitoba get off to a great start at the Canadian Open Masters Curling Championship at the Riverview Curling Club. Armour’s Souris foursome, with Frank Gudz, Don Barr and Ken Sabad, scored three in the sixth end on their way to an 8-3 triumph over the Yukon.
• 10 YEARS AGO — Isabela Onyshko’s artistic gymnastics career hit a new high on the weekend. The 16-year-old Brandonite won a pair of gold medals as well as a silver at a World Cup event in Ljubljana, Slovakia, the first gold medals she has ever won at a world event.
