Fyre Festival founder Billy McFarland has taken to social media to respond to reports about his upcoming festival after city officials in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, said that Fyre Festival II will not be happening in their neck of the woods.

After the town's city hall released a statement on April 3 saying they have "no record" of Fyre 2 happening in Playa del Carmen, McFarland took to Instagram on April 4 to rebuke "inaccurate" "media reports" about his upcoming fest.

“FYRE has been working directly with the government of Playa del Carmen (PDC) and their officials since March 5, 2025 to ensure a safe and successful event,” he wrote online. “All media reports suggesting our team has not been working with the government of PDC are simply inaccurate and based on misinformation.”

He added, “FYRE has operated as a good partner with PDC government and has followed the proper processes and procedures to lawfully host an event, as outlined below."

McFarland then shared a timeline of recent interactions that FYRE has seemingly had with Playa del Carmen's government officials, and included what appeared to be official documents supporting his claims.

TODAY.com could not get in contact with Playa del Carmen official for comment.

In September 2024, McFarland announced that Fyre Festival II will be taking place in Mexico after the first one, which made headlines, was held on the island of Grand Turk in the Bahamas.

“Our relationships with Playa may be new, but I know I speak for the rest of the team when I say we couldn’t ask for a better group of people,” he said.

Entrepreneur and Playa del Carmen’s Martina Beach Club founder Fernando Delgado also expressed his excitement over their joint venture.

“We are very happy to have this festival in Mexico, in Playa del Carmen. We already have permits, so this is going to be very successful,” Delgado said.

The ongoing confusion about the location of the second Fyre Festival comes after the first one, which took place in 2017, failed disastrously and resulted in McFarland serving four years in prison for fraud.

Guests, who were promised a luxury experience, ended up staying in FEMA tents and served cheese sandwiches, even though they had paid thousands of dollars for a ticket.

However, McFarland has since tried to move on from the disaster. In February, he told TODAY, “I think Fyre 2 really isn’t about the past, and it’s not really about me. It’s about taking the vision, which is strong."

He added that he knows that people might be wary in buying a ticket.

“I think it’s always a risk,” he said. “You’re taking a risk because I made a lot of bad decisions and messed up the first festival. Until it’s experienced, there is a risk component to it.”
