The United States of America reiterates its recognition of the Moroccanness of the Sahara

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reiterated on Tuesday his country’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara.

Mr. Rubio told Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita that Washington remained on the same page as Rabat on this issue.

US President Donald Trump has already assured the King of Morocco, Mohammed VI, of this position since his first term.

“In December 2020, President Donald Trump informed the Moroccan sovereign, during a telephone conversation, of the promulgation of a presidential decree, with the undeniable legal and political force that this act entails and with immediate effect,” Marco Rubio recalled in a statement sent to APS.

This decree mentioned the decision of the United States of America to recognize “the full sovereignty of the Kingdom [of Morocco] over the entire region of the Moroccan Sahara.”

At the same time, Washington assured Morocco of its support for “the serious, credible and realistic autonomy proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to this dispute,” said State Department spokeswoman Tammy BruceMarco Rubio maintains that the United States of America “continues to believe that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only feasible solution.”

According to Ms. Bruce, Donald Trump, re-elected after a hiatus from Democrat Joe Biden (2020-2024), wants the parties to engage in discussions “without delay.”

The talks should be conducted “on the basis of the Moroccan autonomy proposal as the sole framework” with a view to negotiating “a mutually acceptable solution,” she reported, adding that the United States of America “would facilitate progress towards this objective.”

Regarding Western Sahara, the United States of America has maintained its logic. Donald Trump has confirmed his position, as has that of his predecessor, Joe Biden, regarding the Moroccan nature of the Sahara.

Western Sahara, a territory not yet recognized by the United Nations and supported by Algeria, has been demanding independence for several decades.
