Tom Parker Bowles, who is the son of Queen Camilla, has spoken about his childhood and his mother's life now she is married to King Charles.

Tom, who is food writer and restaurant critic, also discussed one aspect he struggled to "get" now his mum's life has adjusted as a royal.

Speaking to The Times, Tom, 50, said that his mother loves to travel but is mainly based in the UK now. Despite this, Tom said he still finds time to spend with his mum.

He said: "I tend to go up to Scotland with the kids during the summer holidays, staying with my mother and the King at the Birkhall estate in Aberdeenshire.

"It took me a long while to 'get' Scotland, but once you’ve got it, you’re totally in love. I especially like a restaurant called Fish Shop in Ballater, Aberdeenshire, and the Fife Arms is great."

Growing up Tom would often go skiing in Austria or France but his mother "hated" it and would often "send us up" the mountain while stayed and read her book.

The father-of-two recalled: "She’d come up in the ski lift to meet us for lunch and one time tried to make conversation with the guide, asking him, 'Aimez-vous les chevaux?' (Do you like horses?), to which he replied, 'Oui, avec les frites!' (Yes, with chips!)"

Tom admitted his mother "loves walking" and hasn't changed as she's got older. Meanwhile, he said that if you gave the Queen "the sun and a book", she would be happy.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla arrive for the Ceremonial Welcome at Quirinale Palace during day two of their State Visit on April 8, 2025 in Rome, Italy.

He added: "The King loves walking too, but he’s the most hard-working man I’ve ever met. I don’t think he’s the sort of person who can just flop onto a deck chair and disappear into a book.

It comes as Queen Camilla and King Charles celebrated this 20th anniversary in Rome yesterday (Wednesday, April 10) as part of a royal engagement. The couple were snapped outside the Italian Parliament.

Speaking to reporters there, Camilla, 77, said: "Who could believe it was 20 years?" When asked what the secret is to a long and healthy marriage, she added: "I don't know, well, I suppose it's just sort of friendship, really.

"Laughing at the same things, getting on with life. I suppose doing this (gesturing to the engagement) takes up most of the time."

Tom appears on Saturday Kitchen Live this morning (Saturday, April 12) at 9.30am on BBC One. The show, hosted by Matt Tebbutt, also features guests including singers Billie Porter and Marisha Wallace.
