Montana Distillery shuts down

US-based Montana Distillery permanently closed its doors last month after more than a decade in operation, citing issues over supply and equipment.

Montana Distillery has become the latest spirits producer to close its doors in the past 12 months

Located in Stevensville, a town in Montana, the distillery and tasting room announced that Saturday 15 March 2025 would be its final day of service.

The distillery filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last year, according to a US Bankruptcy Court filing in the District of Montana.

The Montana Distillery produces a range of spirits, including vodka, gin and whiskey. The company’s vodka range boasts flavours such as bacon, cherry vanilla, pepper, cucumber, and coffee.

In an announcement on The Montana Distillery website, the company said: “Before we explain the WTF reasons we want to thank all of our patrons for their continued support and friendships. We have thoroughly enjoyed being part of the Stevensville community and take with us a plethora of wonderful memories! We will really miss the social bonding, interactions and relationships we all created.”

The distillery also expressed its gratitude for receiving awards for its range and serving up the “widest variety of vodkas and craft cocktails in the state of Montana”.

The statement continued: “We have been around since 2012 and have had the adventure of our lives. Sure, owning a company has its issues…the long hours, equipment issues, building issues, supply issues, working when most people are off and then off when most people are working, bogus legal issues… the haters… you name it, we have had experience with it.

“But, we are looking forward to being part of your lives and other friend’s and family’s lives in a more normal environment also. We haven’t hardly seen our families in years, and social outings with friends has been virtually non-existent.

“We look at this as a mini retirement as we move on to our next adventure. Thank you, again! We miss you already.”

In January 2025, Forge and Foundry Distillery in Minnesota, US, permanently shut after four-and-a-half years in operation.

In September 2024, the American Craft Spirits Association noted that at least 49 craft distilleries have closed since January 2023, with the rate of closures accelerating in 2024. Among the closures was Colorado’s Golden Moon Distillery and Lost Spirits Distillery in Las Vegas.

As of August 2024, there were 3,069 active craft distillers active in the US, an 11.5% increase on August 2023, according to the Craft Spirits Data Project.
